Vitalant Medical Director Announcement

Vitalant welcomes Dr. Sierra Simmons as the new Vitalant Field Medical Director for our Southwest Division hospitals

With the transition of Dr. Salima Shaikh to the Northeast Division of Vitalant, we are happy to announce that Dr. Sierra Simmons will be joining our team as the medical director for Vitalant’s Southwest Division with primary oversight over Las Vegas-based operations.

Dr. Simmons received her medical training at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and subsequently completed a Master of Public Health at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Simmons brings to the organization a strong clinical care background, having completed an internal medicine residency at the Mayo School for Graduate Medical Education followed by a transfusion medicine fellowship at University of Alabama at Birmingham, a national leader in therapeutic apheresis. Dr. Simmons joins Vitalant after serving since 2019 as an associate medical director for Spectrum Health Hospital transfusion medicine and blood bank, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dr. Simmons will join Vitalant May 31, 2022, and will work alongside Dr. Robin Cusick to provide Southwest division medical support. Dr. Simmons brings a strong background in patient care to Vitalant, with a passion for process improvement and transfusion education.
